Towering over Babel

In the southern region of what was once known as Mesopotamia used to lie what is believed to be the ancient Biblical city of Babel on the Biblical plain of Shinar. The culture and history of this region offer many similarities to the description of Babel found in the Old Testament as these early towers, some times referred to as ziggurats, were at the center of these cultures.

This region alone has unearthed some 30 different ziggurats that stretch in location from Mari and Tell-Brak in the northwest and Dur-Sharrukin in the north, to Ur and Eridu in the south, and to Susa and Choga Zambil in the east. The sizes vary from 20 meters to 90 meters on a side and all feature a variety of ramps and staircases. The ziggurats were frequently dedicated to the city's patron god or goddess and cities were not limited to one ziggurat.

Many of these structures are dated to be around 4,300 years old to the newer ones of about 3,500 years old. The older ones could possibly be those constructed in the 100 years after the flood that were occupied by the direct descendants of those on the ark whose language was confused because they failed to go out and fill the earth.

Creation application: The older the ziggurats/pyramids, the greater we discover is the level of science and technology. Whether this location is actually the site of the Tower of Babel, as told in the Bible, is not the determining factor as to their Biblical significance. What is clearly revealed here is that these archaeological finds are consistent with the Biblical claims that such structures were built. The structures found in this area have a high degree of sophistication signifying the architectural engineering was first taught here and as the citizens of Babel dispersed out because of the confusion of languages, they took this knowledge with them and built these structures all over the world.
